Pia Mater

2000

‘Pia Mater’ is a 6 meter high glass spine that I made for the Hayward Gallery Show,
‘Spectacular Bodies’ in 2000-2001. Each blown glass vertebrae is illuminated by a white
fibre optic light which creates the light shadows on the wall behind. The spine very gently
moved so that the shadows seemed to breath and with the brain, they suggested thought
and theconscious self. The affect was as if you were walking into a Radiology image.
